“Just avoid the cops on your way home from the Juneteenth celebrations. You know how they can be.” President Biden is reported saying immediately after he signed the bill. “We threw you a bone, what more do you want?” Aids attributed his remarks to a brief moment of truthfulness.
I did a Google search on both of those quotes and got nothing. Where did you get those quotes? (If you were being facetious - never mind.)
I guess my sense of humor is a little too dry. he never said these things. But he might as well have.
Seems unfair to Joe Biden.
A new federal holiday has a role to play but obviously doesn't fix social problems. Everyone is aware that we've got to work to do. That doesn't make the holiday designation less meaningful though.
I've always found it odd that there is no federal holiday to commemorate the end of the Civil War. Appomattox Day or something like that. We've never properly dealt with that and we are far from healing from it.
A Juneteenth holiday is a step in the right direction. People will learn something about slavery and emancipation that they would not have before. Black Americans have been celebrating this on their own and in a big variety of ways since the late 19th century. It's time the rest of the country joined in, and tried better to understand, and to heal.
