......they are working on 2 solutions which will be implemented in 1-2 years.....1) adding ads 2) stopping password sharing.....don't think that either will 'increase' subscribers.....


Netflix is exploring lower-priced, ad-supported plans after years of resisting

After years of resisting advertisements on its streaming service, Netflix is now "open" to offering lower-priced tiers with ads, co-CEO Reed Hastings said Tuesday.
Hastings has long been opposed to adding commercials or other promotions to the platform.
He said during the company's prerecorded earnings conference call, however, that it "makes a lot of sense" to offer customers a cheaper option.

"Those who have followed Netflix know that I have been against the complexity of advertising and a big fan of the simplicity of subscription," Hastings said. "But as much as I am a fan of that, I am a bigger fan of consumer choice, and allowing consumers who would like to have a lower price and are advertising-tolerant to get what they want makes a lot of sense."

The option likely wouldn't be available on the service for a year or two, Hastings said. A new ad-supported tier has a lot of profit potential for Netflix, which on Tuesday reported its first subscriber loss in more than a decade.....

....Netflix announced in March that it plans to crack down on password sharing, and in its first quarter earnings letter to shareholders (pdf), it gave a big clue as to why.

First, it’s increasingly clear that the pace of growth into our underlying addressable market (broadband homes) is partly dependent on factors we don’t directly control, like the uptake of connected TVs (since the majority of our viewing is on TVs), the adoption of on-demand entertainment, and data costs. We believe these factors will keep improving over time, so that all broadband households will be potential Netflix customers. Second, in addition to our 222m paying households, we estimate that Netflix is being shared with over 100m additional households, including over 30m in the UCAN region. Account sharing as a percentage of our paying membership hasn’t changed much over the years, but, coupled with the first factor, means it’s harder to grow membership in many markets - an issue that was obscured by our COVID growth.

Netflix has 222 million “paying households,” but it estimates the service is shared with over 100 million “additional households,” 30 million of which are in the US and Canada. That indicates there is a massive swath of people who aren’t paying Netflix directly for the ability to stream their favorite shows.

“We’re working on how to monetize sharing,” Netflix co-CEO Reed Hastings said in a video regarding this quarter’s earnings. “You know, we’ve been thinking about that for a couple years. But you know, when we were growing fast, it wasn’t the high priority to work on. And now we’re working super hard on it. Remember, these are over 100 million households that already are choosing to view Netflix. They love the service. We’ve just gotta get paid in some degree for them.”.....

Netflix attributes multiple “inter-related factors” to its stunted growth. With over 222 million paying households, their subscriptions are being shared with over 100 million more homes. 30 million of these unpaid accounts are in the United States and Canada. Netflix states it’s been “harder to grow membership in many markets” because it’s an issue that was “obscured by [its] COVID growth”.

Soon streaming services will be no different than cable TV, pay a monthly fee and endure ads anyway.

NO "subscription service" is worth paying for in my opinion. I get a FREE "Standard" Netflix subscription with my T-Mobile account. I also just signed up to accept T-Mo's FREE Paramount+ subscription (and, because I could only "accept" if I allowed "Auto Renew, I entered a Note in my Calendar App to cancel in 300 days). I had a "Basic" Hulu ad supported subscription for $0.99 but cancelled that as I found the ads far too annoying. In the past, I've had FREE Apple TV I got when purchasing Apple products but, the "free" period expired and as far as I was concerned, it was NOT worth paying for. YouTube ads are getting more and more obnoxious. I find myself just closing the tab more and more with YouTube. Far, far, FAR too much "Click Bait" that I now close the tab on. Safari's "Reader View" does help but, there's still room for LOTS of improvement.

Down 35% as I type this.... Ooof... I'm generally a "hold long through bad news" sort, but, that's gotta hurt!

I got out of Netflix stock a long time ago... I made a little money, but, looking at their chart since 2009-ish, I wish I'd have stayed in until fall 2021.

Oh, well...
