Verizon Fios is crazy...
#1
Back in 2019 I upgraded my FIOS triple-play to gigbit ethernet. Somehow, I managed to get the retention specialist to cover half the cost of the new gigbit router and the full installation charge. I wanted limited cable because we only watch the 3 networks on broadcast TV. Everything else is streaming for us.
I got the price down to $137 a month and it's been that price for the past four years.

We probably get 95% of our calls on our two cell phones. We only get sales calls and scammers on the landline, so I called Verizon to find out how much my bill would be if I dropped the $30/month landline and how much in discounts I would lose

It turns out I've been grandfathered in at the 2019 price and if I dropped the landline I would lose that deal and have to pay the current price of $189 for my current package. So, to save $30 a month I would have to pay an additional $50 a month. LOL

I guess I'll be keeping that landline. Maybe I'll just physically disconnect it and have all the calls forwarded to one of the cell phones.

Funny you mention that. I was on the phone with FiOS tech support earlier this afternoon arranging a set top box swap. He made a comment about "Jeez, you have a good plan, but you could get upgraded boxes." After a little back and forth he admitted that I'd be better off talking to Sales for specific costs, because it turns out that if I wanted get an upgraded box, I'd have to get a new router...which I could do, but then I'd have to have a tech come out because our FiOS comes in on coax and "we don't even do that anymore."

So basically, I'm sticking with the old set top box swap until I can talk to Sales and see what we can do.

Consider dropping TV as well.

definitely drop the TV.
I'm paying for 50/50 and getting 100/100. $40/mo, auto pay.
How much network TV do you watch?
Most of which you can prolly get on an inexpensive one time install of an OTA antenna.

What does "our FiOS comes in on coax" mean?

The ONT will have a fiber cable running to it from the pole, and then you can get coax or Ethernet out from there. Usually they do coax on the initial install.

I understand you might need a newer router to get more bandwidth, but there is no reason you cannot do that yourself. What they are probably talking about is the newer faster router would need to be connected via Ethernet instead of coax. This configuration change can be done by a Verizon tech support person over the phone.

Same. And in my case all I had to do was connect my older Verizon router to the ONT via Ethernet, and have tech support provision that jack on the ONT.
