Actually, whether or not you might need to apply a firmware update to a 2015 MBPr is dependent on the OS. I was running Mojave on my 2015 MBPr and needed to install a firmware update to bring it to Monterey. That was an issue since I didn't have the original Apple 512GB SSD in it. I'dlong since replaced the original drive with an OWC 1TB SSD.
To do the update, I had to find the original drive, reinstall it into the MBPr, nuke and pave it, do the firmware update and then remove it again. It was a big honkin' nuisance. Such a nuisance that I nearly bought another OEM Apple SSD to avoid pulling the original SSD from its enclosure, where it was very happy serving as a clone of a different machine.

I remember you saying that in another thread. Mine is on Monterey, etc. so I was saying it probably won't get another firmware at this point.
