….technically it was Merle Oberon but she went to great lengths to hide it…..she lied about where she was born, claiming she was born in Australia but her birth certificate burned in fire….
…..she was able to pass as ‘white’ and never acknowledged her heritage…..discovered after her death…..and her sister was really her mother…..
……the 1st asian to be nominated for best actress…..?!

All I've seen so far is that she was the first Asian winner. Not nominee.

Reading + math.
From the linked article’s intro,
…Yeoh is the first Asian woman to be nominated in the category in over 85 years.
The first was a person who did not acknowledge her own heritage, but instead passed for white, biracial actress Merle Oberon, nominated for the 1935 drama The Dark Angel.
1935 to 2023 = 88 years. in over 85 years.

I can't stand the oscars and all of the award ceremonies, but I'm in love with Yoeh and am very happy to see her win it.

I've had the hots for her ever since
Tomorrow Never Dies. To this day, she stands as the only Bond girl able to match his ability toe-to-toe.

I first saw her in a couple of Hong Kong flicks, Super Cop 3 and Magnificent Warriors.
Bruce Lee made a few movies in Hong Kong, and some of them were actually very funny so I was a fan of the genre.
Then Crouching Tiger.
I never saw Tomorrow Never Dies because I never liked Brosnan post-Remington Steele.
She's never had formal martial arts training, yet she's really good with the moves.
Some of that may come from her background of dance and ballet.
She turned up in Star Trek: Discovery and she was terrific, with a real badass attitude, and always looks like she's having a lot of fun.
She's supposed to get her own Trek series, so I'm really looking forward to that.
Yeah, Yeoh.
