Lining up across from him was an excellent way to shorten a playing career. Butkis hit hard and enjoyed it. He once took out the entire backfield of the Lions during the course of a game.

He was an outstanding player for a very mediocre Bears team. They never made it to the postseason during his career.

Never met him, but when we were in Vegas 11 years ago, he was in a sports memorabilia shop signing autographs. I got within about 10 feet and took a pic.
