Sabrent TB enclosure $20 off
#21
All you have to do is buy a case and drive...

I'm half way there, with a 2T 980 Pro and a 4TB P3 Plus.

So I'm looking for a box that will let me see 40Gbps in a T3 port and 10Gbps in a USB4 slot.

I use 40 and 10Gbps only as a differentiator from USB3 speeds which I see as <10Gbps.

That these are theoretical speeds I won't actually get close to is fully realized.

That my two SSDs aren't the fastest kids on the block is fully realized.

My 2018 mini has:

Four Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports with support for:
Thunderbolt 3 (up to 40 Gb/s)
USB 3.1 Gen 2 (up to 10 Gb/s)

So it looks like a case like the Sabrent would work in any of the four ports.

I liked the look of the Acasis box but there was a couple of detailed reviews that said CS was really bad, and Acasis never says what the box is, only "up to 40Gbps" so I'm thinking USB4, not T3.

Looking at the OWC Pro SX (T3?) box, I saw the 1M2 (USB4) and liked the look, and 3100Mbps does get my attention.

So price wise, it looks like the Sabrent, until the cable goes bad and I need to get out the Dremel, or the 1M2.

Ka,

Unfortunately, it's not a deal. Everyone has it for that price. A bigger issue is that it doesn't use a standard Thunderbolt cable.

The design of the enclosure makes it necessary to use the Sabrent supplied cable. If that one goes bad, you have to modify the opening for the cable to let the box use a standard off-the-shelf Thunderbolt cable.

I'd take the Envoy Express from OWC over this particular Sabrent model. SImilar performance. Rock solid reliable box.

Where did you see this information? I just hooked up one of these with an OWC TB cable and it works fine. No requirement that you use the one that comes with the enclosure.

Since TB3 doesn't carry the full USB4 spec, I don't think you'll find an enclosure that does 40Gbps on TB3 and 10Gbps on USB4. It seems like all the TB3 enclosures are ONLY TB3 and won't work at all on USB.

And then the 40Gbps enclosures are USB4, NOT Thunderbolt, so they drop down to 10Gbps when used on TB3 (really running as USB 3.1 Gen 2).

Ka,

Amazon's web site reviews. Maybe they've since revised the enclosure to remove the idiotic notch that made using Sabrent's cable a necessity unless you physically modify the box.

The enclosure is the same as it always has been. There is a very slight recess that should not interfere with any appropriate cable: the OWC cable is perfect.

I wonder what the folks who wrote that were trying to insert. They can't have been using an appropriate cable.

I also take Amazon reviews with a grain of salt, compared to reviews at B&H. I worked with a guy back in my office days who was a bit odd. One of his goals was to be one of the top reviewers on Amazon (why??????) so he reviewed thousands of items whether he had ever used them or not.

Ka,

It's a known issue with some of Sabrent's enclosures. The reviews for this particular enclosure aren't the first time I've seen the issue. I actually had a Sabrent box which would only work with the USB-C cable that came with it. Tried other known good cables since I needed a lengthier cable for placement and had nothing but trouble. Switched back to the Sabrent cable and it worked. Ended up having to pull the SSD out of the box, which in itself was a nightmare due to shoddy design. It wasn't a Sabrent DYI NVME box. It was a complete Sabrent solution. That probably explains why they made it incredibly difficult to schuck.
