I installed Lightroom on a trial basis, and ran into problems immediately: error message about rebuilding its library, followed by error message saying it couldn't build a new library and was defaulting tp the old one, which doesn't seem to exist. At that point, the app is active but seemingly useless.

Hmmm...did you have a beta version installed? Adobe recommends updating to the latest beta before installing the trial version, assuming you need to keep an existing library. Installation was no problem here and the program is running beautifully on my 1.5GHz Sawtooth with about 6,000 photos in the Library. It doesn't always scroll like butter, but I'm pretty happy with the performance so far.

Here's a link for you :

"Upgrading the Beta Library to Version 1:
The upgrade path from a Beta Library is fraught with peril. Not really, but it does require patience and understanding, especially if you have a large Library. I’ve prepared a video as I do a jump from Beta 4 to V1. Before you begin your upgrade, please read the Readme and help files. Heed the warnings about upgrading therein. Unhide all image files and Import all Photo Binders into the B4.1 Library before starting. On that note, upgrade previous Libraries to B4.1 also. The process will backup the B4 library, in the event of a failure. To aid you in your upgrade here is the video:

AFAIK, I never installed a beta on this particular drive. No "Binders" to import, no library.

Yup, visited there briefly. "Library update going on 18 hours" sounds like a lot of fun.
Anxious to see the improvements in Bridge at this point.
