Softbank pledges big investment in US at Trump Tower
#1
I’ll go there:

Trump announced the deal after meeting with SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, a Japanese billionaire and technology investor, at Trump Tower in New York. On Twitter, Trump claimed that Son said he “would never do this” if Trump had not won the presidential election.

Son told reporters in New York that he arranged the meeting with Trump and likes him “very much”.

Wait - did that say “Twitter”?

Yeah. Not exactly breaking news. Dateline: Dec 6, 2016.

The pair did not give details on what specific investments SoftBank would make, though Son suggested the Japanese company would target the technology sector.

This is my shocked face: :RollingEyesSmiley5:

Trump said after the election he told Apple CEO Tim Apple Cook that he hopes Apple will “build a big plant in the United States, or many big plants in the United States.”

“I do believe that some manufacturing may come back to the United States, primarily because of the fact that president-elect Donald Trump is going to twist Apple’s arm,” Colin Gillis, an analyst at BGC Partners, told CNBC’s “Power Lunch” on Tuesday. “And there’s been reports that Foxconn is reviewing being able to assemble plants, and it would be a good thing.”

And they did! In Wisconsin, Governor Scott Walker pledged billions of taxpayer dollars to lure Foxconn to depressed areas of outstate Wisconsin, where they were going to produce enormous, cutting edge…uh, make that older-tech, smaller displays, for…uh…something. And gobs of jobs were promised.

Trump, uhh…trumpeted this Eighth Wonder of the World back then. And…well, let’s just say it didn’t turn out as promised. (The word “debacle” got used a lot.)

So. Do you remember the huge number of US tech jobs Softbank single-handedly created the last time they announced this?

Yeah, neither do I. But like Lucy holding the football, it was time for Trump and this guy Son to try it again, only at Mar-a-Lago this time, with talk sprinkled with references to “AI”, and with one hundred beel-eeon dollars and 100,000 jobs promised! Woo-hoo!

Meet the new boss; same as the old boss.

You know, it's interesting. I've heard almost no talk of the mythical "blind trust" this time around.

If the president does it, it's not illegal.

Our esteemed SCOTUS. Too bad this bunch wasn't around when Tricky Dick needed them.
