I'd like to connect my 2015 iMac to my new Mini M4 with an ethernet cable but I'd also like to connect my Mini directly to the router. Since the iMac and Mini each have only one ethernet port, is there a way to do this? - TIA

Sure.
You can get a USB3/4 to Ethernet adapter. Look for a Mac friendly one.
But you could also get a Thunderbolt cable and network them, but the 2015 has TB2, so then you need the TB2 to TB3 adapter also.

what Tiangou wrote. Works very well, plug and play. Mine is stuck to a FiOS router, T-Mo cell spot, Ooma VoIP, MacPro3,1 & '18 mini.
The switch I have is a TPlink in a plastic case, but I'd go with the Netgear in the metal case.

If they're both connected to the router and the network, why not have them connect to each other over the network?
