Weird problem with a laptop drive
#11
I once had a problem with my iBook's HD, I knew it was the drive even though everything tested okay, so I used tool after tool, and rest all the tests, test after test every day for seven days straight, then disk utility finally showed a SMART failure, Apple sent it in for repairs the very next day.
Of course it was stolen during shipment and Apple gave me a new iBook G4 w/memory and airport extreme card since the ones I had were for the stolen G3 iBook, but that's another story....

I've got a similar problem right now. Mind you, the drive is still in the PowerBook right now. It'll run fine until suddenly it starts to "grind"... shut the system down for a while, reformat, reinstall, everything seems to be OK, until it acts up again.

The bad news is that Apple hasn't fixed it yet; the good news is that's because AppleCare wasn't registered and it's out of warranty, but receipts have been submitted and it's in processing.

On the issue of temperature...

I'm finished with running my tests (which it passed all of), and so the drive is now idling (I will leave it overnight and see what happens), and... the drive feels pretty cool to me, not at all hot. (Of course that's not a real measurement, but I can tell that the drive is definitely not doing much of anything when it's idling, nor is it likely to be overheating.

The heat comment was related to if there was a problem with the drive... Even at idle, it does warm up from being room temp... if there was a borderline component, that could have been an explanation.... given that it was fine under the test load - that would now be ruled out.

OWC Larry, ah, I see.

If it DOES repeatedly freeze up while idling, but not during stress testing/heavy drive access, it would point to faulty electronics, right? But that would be pretty odd...

Followup: it's now the next morning, and no lockup...

I'll let it idle for another day just to make sure everything is copacetic (sp?), but... looks good so far...
