Disassemble external enclosure?
#1
have a couple of 5.25 in. external FW enclosures that were returned by client after HD's died... these are mostly plastic w/ thin metal lining that the side panels snap together on to close the box for final use... haven't used this type in a while, and forgot where to start prying to open these suckers back up. IIRC, there's a right way to approach this disassembly, and I'd like to re-use the cases after getting the drives out. I do remember breaking one pretty badly earlier in life, by prying from the the wrong side. thanks,

plumax cases? i think you start from the back and they snap of a lot harder than you think

odds are they will only take 128 gig or smaller drives

plumax, yep jdc, that sounds right...

starting from the back didn't work too well... Wink

one of the little ears on the open side snapped off, and then the whole side piece snapped in half on the side next to the power switch and plug...

looks like only one more use after gluing it back... maybe the next one will be friendlier...

an 80GB IBM/Hitachi was inside this, and the other one either has a 60GB or the original 40GB(?) from a 700MHz eMac, so the 128GB odds are clearly unchanged from these datapoints.

any other suggestions before I break the second unit? B)

I'm starting to remember why I stopped using those cases...

you pried under it with a screwdriver, right?

started it with a screwdriver, because I couldn't get enough of a grip with just my fingers, didn't pry... snapped it with fingers only on the fourth or fifth flex; each progressively harder... the other side pretty much popped right off, save the one little plastic ear that didn't play nice...
