recommend a Mac Mini for me

this would be used for dj work at local events. I would pair it with a 17 or 19" monitor and a small keyboard. RAM is important but HD size is not, as I have an external FW 400 drive. I know that there were reports of problems with certain models (some time ago). Which to avoid and what is the best bargain currently? I can wait a few months if something were to be announced by the end of the year, too.

I've been toying with getting a mini but looking at value in terms of price in relation to specs and utility, I'm thinking that a MacBook is the way to go. Price difference is marginal, especially if you take refurbs into account.

I don't think there are problems with any of the current Intel minis.

But yes, a MacBook comes with a monitor and a small keyboard all hooked together. The monitor would be smaller than 17" or 19" though.

refurb macbook and not have to carry a keyboard/mouse & monitor?

You can get a dongle to hook the MacBook to a larger monitor too, if that's what you need.
