An HDTV is a sizable investment, I may as well get what I want the first time around.

That set is fine for some people. As you can see, it's not fine for all people.
That's all well and good, but not all built-in ATSC tuners are created equal. Newer units seem to do better at grabbing signals:

So while having a built-in ATSC tuner might be reassuring, it may not be the best technology available, especially if it is an older or cheaper display... and as a result you are stuck with it built-in old technology.

There are advantages as well to being able to send digital (optical) audio out to an AV receiver... not always possible with all models of HDTVs with built-in tuners.

As for current DVD Recorders and/or VCRs... those should have (by law) ATSC tuners built-in now, so again... no real need to have ATSC in your display if you plan to use it with one of those devices.

Just another perspective. I used to scoff at people who bougt the all-in-one TV/VCR units, knowing that when either component died they were stuck. Not the right product for me, but there *were* many for whom the simplicity made it worthwhile.

There's room enough in the world for both perspectives as long as the pros and cons of each solution are understood and appreciated.

Where I live, I can get HD feeds of all the major networks with my attic mounted antenna. It's a VHF/UHF antenna and the HD channels look much, much better than the analog channels.
