For those of you following my saga of the F&P washing machine, the new diverter valve arrived and was easily swapped into the machine. A new wash was started and a half hour later calls of "flood in the laundry room" echoed through the house. Donning my trusty galoshes (well, actually I just took my shoes off) I waded in with flashlight and tools to peer beneath the infernal machine. As I kneeled there in the soggy mess, I commented to the family that it was difficult to tell where the water was coming out. However, a quick look behind the machine revealed the problem...some dummy forgot to reconnect the drain tube to the drain pipe!!
One thing I gotta say. The new diverter valve has the same incredibly delicate and flimsy connection between the solenoid and valve arm. It's absolutely certain that this one will break too...hopefully not for another 5 to 10 years though.

One of the side benefits that go with being the family problem solver is the opportunity it opens for comments when the problem needs to be solved again. I remember those comments.
I gave up problem solving when my youngest reached puberty, I resolved from that point on to be their problem. If I haven't actually succeded I'm at least ahead of the (no longer) little bastards.

I'm glad I'm not paying you to learn how not to repair a washing machine. :-)
In a couple more years you might be worth $19.00 an hour. :-)

Years ago I did the same thing. What a mess.
When I replaced the vinyl with tile in the laundry room a couple of years ago, I took the opportunity to put in a floor drain plumbed to a daylight drain. It hasn't been used yet, but I stand confident that the next time I screw up, the whole kitchen won't flood again!

Recent studies have shown that sucessfully repairing some piece of technical equipment produces a brief increase in testosterone production in males. It might be the *right* time...

You've pretty much outlined why I'm hanging on to my top-loading direct-drive Whirlpool washer.
In almost 20 years, I've only had to replace the lid switch.
And that was easily bypassed with a paper clip until the replacement part arrived (via ebay)
