VCR/DVD combo recorder
#1
Need to transfer a few hundred movies from VCR tape to DVD, but would also like to use the VCR side to record shows off network TV. Looking for one device.
Don't have cable, or satelite. No Tivo or DVR.
Is this possible? Most devices I've seen only record onto tape from a satelite or cable box, not directly from the broadcast TV.
Anyone with any experiences?

I'm not familiar with the units themselves, but there is a decent selection at Overstock.com http://www.overstock.com/Electronics/Tos...oduct.html

I just bought a Panasonic DMR EZ37V from Sam's Club for $100. It was originally sold for $247 and it was marked down as one of the last 3 they had sitting in a shopping cart.

It does exactly what you are asking--I've transferred a couple of home VHS tapes to DVD and also recorded from cable to vhs and also to dvd without any problems. It shows a setup for recording off the air, but I didn't try that since I have cable.

One thing I noticed is that one of the replacements for this one at Sam's doesn't have a built-in tuner. Be careful not to get one of those.

There were a few on special on Black Friday in the $100-150 range. Heck, even Big Lots had a refurb for about $100 in their flyer.

Be aware that many VHS movies have copy protection. There is no way to defeat it with an all-in-one unit. There are devices that will bypass the security but not with the type of unit you are asking about.

(if anyone knows different, please say so as I'm trying to help a friend with that issue right now)

analog out through "a little black box" then back to the analog in and record onto the DVD.

I have a Pye PY90VG VCR/DVD player/recorder. I ran into a problem while copying my home camera's vhs tapes to dvd, in that the vhs tape and dvd recorder randomly both stopped playing and recording. Turns out the vcr player in the Pye must get a signal off my home tapes (maybe when I started and stopped recording originally) that tell it there is some copy protection on the tape.

My solution was to run the signal from another vhs player I have into the front inputs on the Pye. DVD's burn all the way through with this setup.

The Pye is also sold under a number of different brands.
