Looking for a new keyboard-anyone use the logitech s530 laser?
#1
I am looking to reconfig my workstation and see many wireless and almost flat keyboards. At the local Apple Store they had the Logitech S530 laser which looked interesting. But, alas, they wouldn't open the sealed package nor had one out. The point of going to the store was to get the "feel" of a tactile product like a keyboard. So I was wondering if anyone has come across this keyboard mouse combo?

Is the wrist rest hard plastic or soft gel? Any review links (Mac) or experiences appreciated. Thanks!

I believe one of the office stores would have them on display, or Fry's if one is nearby. Of course, I'da just opened the one in the Apple Store before they told me not to.

wrist rest is hard plastic, not gel. keys feel pretty good, and have fairly decent travel; personal preference item, I like a bit longer key travel to help avoid mis-types, and scooped key tops (vs. flat), so S530 has been good for our iMac kb & mouse. gel pad would be nice, though...

I wouldn't do that before taking it apart... looks like there may be some electronics stuffed under there; definitely the power/connect button and battery slots to start with, plus I'd bet on other goodies under there, too. I'm considering a thin, foam backed, leather pad however... FWIW, Baby Buzz gives it two thumbs up (local Mac shop has one set up on low end MacPro demo unit that he frequents), and keeps trying to get me to swap kb's w/ his tower, or get him one of his own...

Good point Buzz, I'll shut down the bandsaw. Thanks. ;-)

For a cover, you can get Neoprene at a fabric store adn Spray Mount (3M Spray adhesive) different thicknesses of sponge rubber foa you buy at the same store. Wrap the edges or make a sleeve and its a nice cover to spray glue to your kb. We have used neoprene to upholster race car seats with the foam mounted to it and it has a great feel to it. A lot easier to work with than leather and better than Naugahyde.

actually, now that I look a bit closer, the silver "pad" area at the bottom appears to be a separate piece of plastic that looks like it ought to pop/pry off w/o too much difficulty, which would make attaching a pad, as you describe, even easier, better fitting, and better looking... how 'bout trying that, and let us know how it works, no bandsaw required...
