..can't write to new external drive?

I have a Gateway USB drive hooked to my iBook along with the FW external to copy. Info panel says that I do not have permission to write... ? This is an out of the box drive and I have not done anything to it. Advice on how to change the permissions on this? Tx

Is it formatted with NTFS? I think thats read only to a Mac.

Disk Utility should be able to format it so a Mac can use it.
