Gas price keeps going up in the mean while public transportations

Sorry, I don't see any destinations here that are out in "the sticks". Are you referring to Pontiac Michigan? That line serves a relatively densely populated, and relatively poor part of the state-- I wouldn't be surprised if most runs are to capacity. Amtrak has been forced to eliminate under-capacity lines for decades-- not sure how you got the idea there's a bunch of fat to trim. Do you have recent experience riding an empty train?
Did you click on the link "view map pdf"? They have routes in northern Montana and North Dakota - a route that runs through Fargo North Dakota. There are routes through Winslow Arizona, and Elko Nevada. I've been to Elko Nevada; there's a whole lot of nothing there. However, there are so many stars in the night time sky that you can't pick out the constellations...

I have ridden the Amtrak route from Sacramento to the Bay Area when it was practically empty.

Look, I'm a fan of public transportation, but I can see no good reason for Amtrak to try and cover the whole breadth of the nation. I'd like to see them become primarily a commuter railroad in high density areas like the northeastern corridor of the U.S., with their funding coming from those state and local governments.

I'm not going to spend hours searching the documentation, but it's been widely reported that Amtrak loses money on most of it's long runs. I'm fairly certain that even the Lake Shore Limited, from NYC to Chicago is a loser. The Albany-NYC corridor is profitable, as are many of the CA and Northeast commuter/business corridors. The long routes can't make money off occasional and vacation travelers.

Well, with the cost of jet fuel going up so much, perhaps there will be a movement towards more medium haul rail passenger runs. That instead of the small commuter air transports.

[quote kap]... remain a joke especially in southern CA. It takes 1 hour and a half for a one mile trip on a city bus from Arcadia to Monrovia (San Gabriel Valley). It takes 2 hours for a Simi-Valley transit for a 1/2 mile journey. In short, pure aggravations! What improvements to the existing public transportation infrastructure do you think should be done in your own regions? Do you think the billion dollar budget spending on the improvements will help or hurt in the long run as we, hopefully, become less dependent on oil? I shouldn't even contemplate on posting this question in the first place because there is no way out?

Mods, please move this post if you have reasons to believe this post is so political that it is devoid of Tips and Deals Wink

Man, I must have listened to "New World Record" about 1,000 times when I was 13.
Which was why it bugged me so badly . . .
Lost it and some others (George Carlin Class Clown was one, forget the rest) in an experiment tited "The effect of leaving a stack of 12", 33 RPM LPs on a radiator".

Wierd, as I was typing the above, and trying to figure out whether Alice Cooper "School's Out" also got eaten by the radiator, this was posted a few threads above.
