95 Ford Contour Fixes Follow - up
#1

Follow up to thread above,

Never really jacked the Contour up, to check out what the problem would be. So I took it to a place I had done some business before. Discovered that one side (passenger) had oil leak, which was enough to cause the underside chrome below door to be covered with oil grime. Not the driver side.

Mechanic discovered that the oil sender device was leaking, and also thought the oil filter was leaking. Then this oil may have caused a large rubber piece that holds the front end stable (big rod was going through a support point, with no rubber to hold tight). Bushing? When I would go over bumps, it would make the noise. It apparently was not the axels, making the noise.

$198.00 and maybe the oil leak is fixed, will watch. Just looked in the driveway and there is a wet spot of oil. Maybe something else leaking as well, but maybe it takes a while for oil to drop off engine. And definetly do not have the noise coming from going over a rough road.

Could have saved a few bucks by doing this myself, but by the time I had them do the diagnosis, I thought the labor would be worth my time. After I picked the car up, it was able to pass smog later in the day.

The Check Engine light still comes on between 2nd and then goes off running in 4th or 5th gear. (4 cylinder). But this vehicle is an OB I, not II, so there was no hook up to the under dash for smog check. Took a look at gas cap, and it holds pressure. Tightend a screw on it however.

One thing I notice on smog check is that the NO (PPM) is a lot higher, everything else seems to be just because its a little older, with 10,000 more miles. But probably should have the codes read with OBI, and see if it indeed would be the O2 Sensor.

Also, one time in the past, when the electric radiator fan went out, the engine did overheat a little. Fan was replaced, but since then the gauge in the dash has been always reading high. Just turned on engine when it was somewhat cold, and the gauge is over by cool, but when engine runs it gets about 3/4 or more, but not in red. Do you think it is the Temperature Sensor to be changed ?? or maybe the Thermostat if it did not get changed when fan was replaced? or worse the gauge in the dash.

Thanks all for suggestions.

Sure is nice to have all the paperwork on this vehicle and know everything that has been done. Only 47,000 miles, and it is a 1995. And invoice from dealer says they paid $17,645.35 for vechicle new. Also discovered original owner took it to dealer in 2005 for engine oil leak and smell of oil (like I smell now) and had oil pan gasket and oil sender unit (like today) put on for $450

Didn't want to tempt fate by using the standard F/U in your subject, eh? Smile

Yes, a bushing. Petroleum products will destroy rubber products with long-term exposure.

You could have warped the head in previous overheat just enuf to comsume coolant, but not see it burn. Check your coolant levels and recovery tank and watch that.

The engine light -- possible transmission range sensor.....? Does it shift hard or delay or
bump at all in that gear range at low speeds?

These items are all bargain items in YouPull (you don't want to have to buy knew for such
mechanical crap as a TRS - they almost all look alike regardless of car, and vary only by
size).

Can you arrange to drive it with an OBD reader so you can see your codes before you shut
the engine off?

Reminds me of my nickname for my 95 Contour - "Murph".

If it could go wrong, it would.
