Looking for 12v USB hub-More info
#1
I'm not using a cig outlet, I am doing a custom audio install and the head unit has a single USB connector that is used to either an MP3 player, or something like a thumb drive. I plan on installing a USB port and an SD card reader into the dash. I have found no issues with a simple USB 2.0 card reader, but I have found that the Pioneer head unit cannot power a USB hard drive.

I think I will look for a 12v to 5v power adapter and wire things in that way. I was just hoping for an off the shelf unit.

Google brings up:

You could also make your own 12 vdc to 5 vdc supply using one of these:

http://www.radioshack.com/product/index....Id=2062599&cp=2032058.2032230.2032279&parentPage=family

The diagram on the back shows how to hook it up. Center pin is common. One outer leg goes to 12 vdc and the other to 5 vdc. Secure a heatsink to the fin and its good for up to 1 amp.

Thanks, looks like a small 12v to 5v adapter is what I'll be doing. Basically going to install a USB port and SD reader into the dash of a car
