We've had more Presidential candidates up here in Northeast Ohio than, well, I think since James A Garfield campaigned out of his front porch a few miles from where I live. And it's telling that:
1- McCain is campaigning in the suburbs (my kids high school last night)
2- Hillary is campaigning in the colleges (my kids community college tomorrow)
3- Obama is campaigning in the inner city this weekend
There's a certain symmetry to that, and it tells to the power base and comfort level of each candidate in terms of their most productive and influenceable constituency. Perhaps also the opportunities for large crowd draws are larger in the inner city, and Obama seems to be able to drag in a HUGE crowd. Of course the fact that the Boss is opening for Barack may have something to do with it. Cleveland is still the home of Rock & Roll.
And once Ohio delivers the vote, what will happen ?
Yup. Forgotten again.
Oh, in other news, our largest Steel Mill, the rotting corpse of LTV Steel that was bought for a few pennies and some glass beads by a couple of opportunistic boys in India, has just gone dark (again). With the increase in the dollar, the drop in global demand, the drop in prices, well,,,, everyone's orders have gone to zero. My own plant is cutting hours and telling everyone to hang on, it's getting really, really bumpy. We don't lay people off, but we damn sure are gonna feel this.
And the Next President of the United States ?
Will have to deal with a fractious congress that, having taken complete and utter control of the Executive and Legislative branches, will have no idea what it wants to do next.
I'm envisioning the pan-arab army trying to run Tunis in the saga "Lawrence of Arabia".
My mortgage isn't underwater.. yet. We have food, and the bills are paid. We have a little money in the bank- a small local bank that is solvent. My wife works in geriatric care, and that ain't going away.
