Collecting in some logs to dry out for the winter and I came across this one. Couldn't bring myself to break it up so I've put it to one side to watch over the next few weeks. I love the tiny single toadstool on the side and the size can be guaged from the woodlouse in the third picture.

There are a number of different woodlice and only some can roll themselves up into a ball. Those are the pill bugs and they don't have 'skirts'.

We grow shiitake mushrooms on logs in the back yard. Widely available inoculation kits cost about $30, plus you need some fresh logs to spec (3- to 4-inch diameter), and you have to keep them moist for months.

But the results are excellent.
