eBay is full of knock offs pretty cheap. http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=m38&_nkw=Softbox+Light+Tent+Cube+Soft+Box

Or there are several DIY directions around that would let you design the size/quality you want. search here: http://strobist.blogspot.com/

I went to the local cloth store and purchased 5 yards of muslin for under $15. Bright white and you can drap it anywhere. I have also used it as a sun reflector for some outside shots. Not a 'studio' but if you know how to work lighting it does the job.

i might go for the ebay knock offs. the cardboard box box looks like a good idea but i live in nyc. i'm not going to store a box like that - i would if i lived in a more spacious place.

tape the joints, and cut and collapse the box when you are done. Or hinge them with cloth tape, and make some velcro tabs.
