Any ideas on what's wrong with my MBP?
#1
Occasionally my MBP's screen will not wake up - this usually occurs after I'd had it attached to my external monitor. Usually a restart solves the problem.

Last night, I could not get it to wake up, but when I restarted, nothing happened - I heard the chime, but that's it - no screen. I tried resetting the PRAM, but it wouldn't even get that far. I reset the PMU (pull the battery, hold the power button), and it worked again - no problem. Once booted, I repaired the disc and fixed any errors.

This morning, I could not wake the machine. I tried all of the above. But this time, nothing seems to work. In fact, I usually don't even get a chime.

Any ideas as to what's going on? Anything else to try?

No chime is not a good sign. I just turned in my MBP for a mobo repair (gone a week already...).

Try re-seating the RAM. Try starting it in Firewire target mode. Try starting up from a bootable DVD or HD.

Yes - Applecare, of course.

I managed to boot it into target and cloned an image.

I will call AC tomorrow and sent it back for repair. Too bad.

I got it into target mode again - took about a dozen restarts. Most of the time, it turns on with no sound. When I hear the chime, I can hold T and get it into target mode. I'm zeroing out the drive now,so I can send it to AC. All this time, the screen never goes on.

I'm sure glad I was able to make that image before it blew up...

There's a defect in the Nvidia chips in many MBP's. Apple's got a quiet recall going.

Right. The AC person told me this. Box coming today...I will hopefully have it back by the end of the week.
