One year I got $20 in cash. At a different employer I received Starbucks gift cards a few times. Nice sentiment but not really a "bonus".

What did they give the non-coffee drinkers?
Starbuck's has teas, chai, non-caffeine blended drinks, and hot chocolate, mugs and music.

(can ya tell i just started workin' there...)
How about Krusty Burger's partially gelatinated non-dairy gum-based beverages?

Yep..that's what I do for my guys. The journeymen and master machinists make a little more. Salary workers all get the same flat bonus. We still have a Christmas Party at the local "T-Bones" steak house for employee's and their wives/husband. I find that these 'bonuses' are expensive but are invaluable for keeping 'espirt de corps'. Very few of my guys (or girls) bitch about work. Well, get any group of adults together and you'll always have the few who complain about anything. I also have the 'honor' of having 55 employee's....and 33 are related (most to me). We make Deliverance look like a documentary 'round here.

Besides...I blame greedy pig managment for the problems we now face. I may not make as much personally, but I know my friends and co-workers are paid well and have a great workplace.

My company gives a bonus that is based on a percentage of our earnings before taxes. Since the 1930's. It's been as high as 150% of your years pay back in the 60's. This year was an awesome year, and it's going to be high. Next year will really suck, tho.

They do, however, pay Health Insurance premiums out of the bonus, and Uncle Sam takes a straight high percentage (Bonus income is taken off at a higher rate). Also the going rate for workers is lower than average- the bonus is an inventive. Bonuses are based on performance as well, so there's some incentive math there too.

It works. This is a highly motivated and productive workforce. And we're a heavy manufacturing company in Ohio, and making a profit.

So, what do you think the Wall Street folk are getting?

No bonuses for me this year. In fact, all non-union employees are getting a wage freeze for 2009; the union members are getting 4% raises.
