I opened a second window this morning to cross check entries, and now I can't get rid of the extra! I've done this before many times and usually it simply disappears when I close it, but this time the silly thing won't go away. Help! Might I have accidentally hit Save when I was working on the duplicate? I can't find a second copy of the workbook in my folder, but two identical workbooks open every time I try to access the original. Any help in getting rid of this creepy thing will be appreciated! Thank you.

Sounds like you saved the files as a workspace (.xlw) - do a "save as" to save one of the files as an Excel workbook (.xls) and delete the other(s).

Neither has the .xlw extension. One is .xls:1 and the other .xls:2. The only copy that shows in the folder in which the original is kept has just .xls. ???
I just did a Save As for one of them and renamed it, and then I trashed the original. When the new one opens, it still has two windows, and the file extensions continue to appear as above (but with the additional character I added when I renamed.) Grrrrrr.
