I haven't really followed post-CRT technology.
I've looked a bit and kind of settled on a Toshiba 1080p model like these:

I don't know enough to know what I don't know . . . any wisdom appreciated. The space is the top of a dresser that's exactly 36" wide (it can hang over an inch or two in either direction though.
I guess the only question I know I have for sure has to do with viewing angle-- typically would view from about 2 feet below, 12 feet away-- do these bases generally swivel such that the panel could point slightly down? I could probably rig some sort of a wedge for it to sit on if not. but would rather not have to . . .
