Hmmm, I see that our sponsor has about the lowest price on this: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/ElGato/10020780R/
... other than it being a refurb, is this a good way to go?
QS??
As in Quick Silver??
Not enough beans to meet specs.:
"Note: 720p or 1080i HD features require a Dual PowerPC G5 or an Intel Core Duo processor."
BGnR
Yes, Quicksilver. From btfc's link: "Video is very demanding and requires USB 2.0 ports. More recent G5 Macs and Core Duo Intel CPU's are best able to keep up with full-screen viewing and HD TV content. Models like the 250+ that support hardware compression of Analog signals are a smarter buy for slightly older G4/G5 Macs on 10.4.x - the minimum system reqirements for most tuners."
I guess you're a little mixed up.
You won't be able to watch HDTV, or even edit it on your QS.
In fact if you save your analog video as mpeg2 you won't be able to edit/play it via the QS.
Yes, somebody will wade in and declare that their "non-G5/Intel" Mac can play back HD.
What they don't tell you that it is in a teeny-tiny window on their Mac and it is still jerky and pixelated.
Why buy an HD receiver in the first place?
If I was in your situation I would get a cheap Plextor and some Government coupons and do it that way.
BGnR
PM me if you want real info from somebody that has been there, done that, and wrote that ElGato Tech note.
BGnR, I'm watching DTV (not HD though, obviously) on the QS now via the Miglia card ... that's what I was looking to replace.
I've had no problem editing the analog video.
I've already got several of the converter boxes, that's not the issue ... the issue is that the Alchemy card no longer works in Leopard, and I need to get video in... the ability to tune HD is just an added bonus.
Once again...
DTV
IS NOT HDTV
You
cannot view HDTV on your QS in any usable window size.
BGnR
If you want anymore info, PM me.
Yes, I know (about the not viewing HDTV, though I can still watch HDTV programs downconverted by the converter box) ...
Again, the issue isn't watching HDTV on the QS per se -- it's about getting DTV in.
