Synchronize desktop and laptop?
#1
I thought I'd read a thread about syncing work files shared on a desktop and laptop but can't seem to find it so...

I'd like to synchronize my projects and sites folders on my desktop and laptop, they are running 10.4.11 and 10.5.(?) respectively.

I did find mention of Synchronize! X Plus and thought I'd remember others mentioned too.

Thanks in advance,

For many years I used both a laptop and desktop, but got frustrated with synching and now just use a new Macbook, which I connect to various HDs for backup and a large monitor when at home.

I found that synching software was too time consuming and would occasionally leave me with two files/folders that I would have to manually figure out which was most current. It was much faster and easier to synch manually, especially when trying to hurry out of the house in the morning. To facilitate manual synching I did my best to organize the files on my "main" computer (the desktop one in those days) so that I could easily drag the important set to my laptop. For email, I used (and still use) IMAP protocol to make sure that my mail was in synch.

I thought that the best synching software was Chronosync http://www.econtechnologies.com/

But, still ended up doing in manually for years.

I've used Windows Live Sync (formerly FolderShare) for about 18 months now, and I absolutely love it.

I set up three computers - my home desktop, my work desktop and my laptop, and I added a few folders on each (research, writing, and other). Live Sync keeps those folders synchronized all the time. So, if I am at home and working on my desktop, when I get to work, the folders are synchronized. When I pop open my laptop, I see all the files update right away. It really is a terrific service, and it is free. Some friends were using DropBox, but they have a limit to how much you can sync. I know some here will not want to use it because it is Microsoft. For me, this solution has really worked well, and I have yet to find something simpler or better implemented.

Dude, why are you here at macresource?

Seriously, isn't there a winresource or something that you'd find more, uh, interesting?

Some time ago I found I really didn't need a laptop and a desktop computer so I sold off the desktop. I'm happy.

another vote for live sync! Foldershare was awesome as well. Only I don't think this will work for the OP as live sync requires 10.5 min.

I've been using Drop Box http://www.getdropbox.com for a few months now and have found it to be great. Transparent, quick, decent size limits without cost (2GB ), secure, and files can be accessed on the net if you're away from your machines. Not sure if that's exactly what you want, and whether the size limit is an issue, but it's been great for me.

Thanks for all these interesting ideas!

My desktop is slower than my laptop but it is so well configured for my workflow... Perhaps when I get virtual hosts going on the laptop, I won't feel the need for duping workspaces.
