Broadband funding in stimulus plan sparks debate

As a country we are rapidly coming to a point where good Internet service is considered part of the infrastructure like the Eisenhower Interstate Highway System.

What year is this? 1995? Is digital divide reappearing? If somebody read your post he would think we are a country of 28.8K dial ups. I don't know a single person who is not on broadband. And they are of the most modest means. Oh sure, you can find some one living in a shack in Montana somewhere but there are people still with black and white TV too.

For you to complain about the ATT service and then wistfully long for government service borders on insanity.

Report: Some dial-up users wish to stay that way
Posted by Dawn Kawamoto

Got dial-up and don't want to give it up? You're not alone.

An estimated 10 percent of Americans are surfing the net via dial-up connections, according to a report released Wednesday by the Pew Internet and American Life Project.

And a lot of those people apparently see no compelling reason to change. The report indicates that those users are not itching to make a change to a speedier broadband connection in large part because, they say, broadband is too expensive.

Of this dial-up group, 35 percent cited the cost issue, while 19 percent say nothing will ever prompt them to change. Another subset--14 percent--say they're still on dial-up because broadband is not available in their neighborhoods

I haven't been off the dial-up that long...

It is easy to complain about ATT, in their areas of service, they are a monopoly. Remember Ma Bell being broken up into Baby Bells who keep recombining into ever larger telecoms?

I am on dial-up at 20 kpbs download. I am on a US highway, but AT&T said they will probably never have DSL out here, 2.5 miles from town. Hughes Network sucks. My DTV converter box will not pick up any stations. I am for any improvement.

My local city government provides free WiFi zones. The industry introduced a bill to make that illegal. Why would they do that Dakota?

Maybe they could next introduce a bill to make it illegal to pave streets or maintain sewers if a private company is available to fill the potholes or unplug the street drains?

How does an industry "introduce" a bill?

When I want you to answer I'll call your name. Will be a while. Now get back to your TV. The Girls Next Door is on.
