The interwebs know too much about us

So, I finally got around to applying for the DTV converter coupon for the one TV in the house that's not connected to the dish. I filled out the form fairly casually (I left off the "Extension" part of the street name and the +4 zip).

The confirmation page added 'Extension' and the +4.

I wonder whose database they're using.

And FWIW, it's supposed to ship 4/21. Anybody recommend a good model or should I just trust Consumer Reports?

probably the one from the post office? They must have a pretty good algorithms and LUTs for determining this stuff from packages and envelopes addressed by idiots.

Not a bad guess.

I ran into somebody at a party a few years back who worked at one of the Post Office sorting facilities. There were 3 T3 lines going in with images of envelopes that could not be OCR'd. His group's job was to fill in the missing information and the computer did the rest.

Then, the info was transmitted back to the sending facility which printed the sort info back onto the package or envelope (the yellow bar code you sometimes see on mail).

Last I'd heard, his facility was being closed because the OCR software was letting less and less bad input through.

I have always wondered if the post office's OCR software is the best OCR hardware/software on the planet.
