Court Blocks Sales of Word in U.S.

The result of a patent infringement suit against MS. MS has sixty days to respond. It's of course being appealed.

I do wonder what this might mean for any other application (such as Pages) "that can open documents containing custom XML which includes .XML, .DOCX and .DOCM files."

The Judge's order blocks Microsoft from selling or importing into the United States any version of Word that can open documents containing custom XML which includes .XML, .DOCX and .DOCM files. While the injunction blocks the sale of Word in its current state, it doesn't prevent Microsoft from selling versions of the application that open XML documents as plain text.

Wow!

Ok, it's not quite as bad as the subject line and MO headline would imply, but it's still significant.

I don't remember even hearing about the lawsuit.

I still save MS Word documents as .doc instead of .docx

That's ironic.

MS was recently awarded their own (probably invalid) patent on XML-formatted documents.
