Mac Pro - hard drive install question

Out of curiosity, do you need to shut it down to install a hard drive in an empty bay?

Well technically no, I think you can physically open up the case and slide the new drive in without shutting down, BUT I don't think that would be a very good idea.

My understanding about SATA HD is that they are hot swappable...that being said, I've never even thought of trying a hot swap. To me any thing that moves at 5,000-7,000 RPM is a delicate item. YMMV.

Knock yourself out, but only if you can find "hot-swappable" in regard to a Mac Pro anywhere on the apple.com site.

IIRC, you're not even supposed to open the case without shutting down the machine.
