Updated Intego Virus Barrier X5, Locked Out of the Internet
#1
This was a MacHeist freebie. Intel Mac Mini 1.83 DP. OSX 10.5.8 Updated the program, not just the definitions. after restart, no internet. Network Diagnostics shows everything working fine thru Ethernet. VOIP working, This Linux netbook working on the same router via ethernet. Will not fetch anything thru Mail, Safari, Firefox, Interarchy, NADA.

Unplugged everything and shutdown and repowered the Mac several times. Used App Cleaner to remove Virus Barrier and NetUpdate and the associated plist files. Still get the spinning wheel.

Is there some preference file or something I can delete to force the Mac to start over with a new connection. Are there hidden Virus Barrier files I need to delete?

Try a new user.

Good for you to try to uninstall but I wouldn't rely on App Cleaner to do that job properly. Intego may provide instructions for doing so.

This might help. I too bought the Macheist bundle and installed it on 10.5.8. Then I found an issue where I couldn't eject disk images and trashed it. Seems I recall that I had to reinstall (after trying to remove it without following their steps) then followed their method and got it off. YMMV.

Edit: I was just researching another issue and came across this thread. It was about removing an application installed by stealth by Epson (I have to assume their scanner driver as I don't have an Epson printer). Anyway, it describes how to remove the Arcsoft Connection app. I followed the instructions and discovered Integro also puts an entry in the same file, so you might want to check whether that file retains the Integro entry after uninstall and edit it out if it remains. I used BBEdit to remove the Arcsoft entry as it displays xml better than TextEdit.

Here's the pertinant info from the webpage linked above:

"jegelie
Arcsoft uses a dirty trick, a loophole that Apple should close. It uses the same mechanism as used by the prefpane \"Accounts\" (Login items). But in stead of saving these preferences in the /Users/my_user_name/Library/Preferences/ folder, it saves them directly in /Library/Preferences/. So there is no Login Items prefpane to edit that.

When you enter the folder /Library/Preferences/, you will find a file called \"loginwindow.plist\". When you open that either with Property List Editor (part of XCode dev tools) or TextEdit, you will see a key \"AutoLaunchedApplicationDictionary\". Under that key you will find \"/Library/Application Support/ArcSoft/Connect Service/ConnectService.app\. That is the culprit.

If it is the only application in that plist, then remove the file (otherwise remove only the entry). Next startup the Arcsoft Connect Service will not start again (until done so by hand of course) wrote:

Hmm...

Are you running LittleSnitch? If so, turn it off for testing-purposes.

What do Firefox and Safari report when you try to load your home page?

What does the Console report when you try to load your home page?

Firefox and Safari just say "connecting to.....". Console reports the existence of an Evernote Safari plugin, Firefox nothing.

although this is a dead thread, i'll post how it turned out. I reinstalled Waterrroof (firewall) which I thought I had gotten rid of. Flushed the IPv4 and IPv6 caches and it worked for a minute. then it locked up. I restarted a couple of times, and then neither the Mac nor the Linux Netbook wee working. So I unplugged the cable Modem and the Router and plugged them back in and now everything works. fingers crossed.

Watterroof Firewall is turned off but not uninstalled because they don't have an uninstaller.
