Ext. FW Drive and Migration Assistant

Am I correct in assuming should my mom's Powerbook fail that I can use her bootable ext. FW drive during Migration Assistant when connecting to a new Mac to transfer all her data?

Yup!

(I'm assuming it's a periodic clone of the internal drive? )

Yes I'm using SuperDuper to make a clone of the drive then scheduling nightly Smart Updates.

Is it a FW800 dirve? I found a cable to connect old FW drives to new FW800 ports.

It's a FW 400 & 800 but I'm using 400.
