Recommend a washer / dryer (front loader)
#1
Our washer and dryer are both on the way out. I'd like to buy another pair - washer and gas dryer. They need to be front loaders and have to be stackable, since we have tight space in our condo. Our current set are in that same configuration and are full size machines. We have four kids, so there is at least one load per day, usually more.

I've been perusing the Sears site, and the array of possibilities is staggering. Over 120 front-loading washers alone.

Our budget is modest - no top-of-the-line for us. I would like to spend $900-$1100 for the pair, if possible.

Any suggestions?

I have been very happy with our Kenmore set bought 4 years ago at Sears.

I was at Sears on State maybe 2 weeks ago and they had a stacked set that was on clearance-- can't tell you anything more specific because I didn't note the brand etc., just flirting with the idea (whenever I have an opening every damn tenant wants in-unit laundry in a $725 apartment in Little Village).
Your best deals come this way, by seeing what's sitting in the showroom.
If you have a brand question, though, you want to PM modelamac - he's the master (will tell you to avoid Kenmore though.)

This one is on the list of Consumer Reports top models:

although maybe slightly out of your price range -- i will say stay away from bosch

had mine for a year now, and have been fairly disappointed.

started out great, but the honeymoon is long over

the washer dances like crazy on the spin cycle (even when we turn it down), the detergent cover broke, theres mold in the front that cant be removed, a lip that sucks all small things into it (socks, small washcloths, etc) and i just noticed a big crack on the top front where the door closes. and i swear our towels and sheets feel "rougher" since using it.

Dryer has the worst lint screen ever designed. the only redeeming factor is the "mist refresh" on the dryer

stay away.

At sears whirlpool duet sport right now 979.00 for pair. lots of complaints on web site from a couple of years ago. The newer electronics have cycles off being lousy.

Craigslist! The most expensive pair of W/D on my local list were 280.- pair. Looked to be a very late model. Many to chose from. When people move they don't take or can't take their W/D's.

I just bought my first front loading stackables as we are reconfiguring our laundry area which will now only allow a stackable.... i looked in consumer reports and the hard thing is that if you get a highly rated washer, the dryer is usually not the best, and if you get a highly rated dryer, the washer is not the best.

I went with a washer that was highly rated and 4.0 cu feet. (total was $1300 or so I think, I can't find the receipt right now). I was looking at a well rated model at sears (sorry, can't remember it at the time) but it was only 3.5 cu feet and to be honest, it just looked too small. So I went with 4.0.... a little more money, but I think it'll be worth it. Home Depot had a much better price on this GE (10% off currently, free delivery and haul away). Don't forget that you'll have to pay for accessories such as a dryer cord (yeah, they don't give you one), dryer vent, and stacking unit.

If you need specific model numbers I can find them, just PM me.
