American Flag! (no sales tax?)
#1
I went shopping today and my Dad bugged me to buy an American Flag. It happned we were at COSTCO and I asked, they didn't have any. It was getting late and there was a Walmart nearby, so I had not choice but to step into a Walmart. They have several types flags, got a cheap one, better than I expected (and made in the US!).

Surprise, at the checkout, no sales tax for US flags. I didn't expect that.

it's gonna be a long time before I step into walmart again

I got mine at Wally Mart too. Check the package on that flag, they proclaim "proudly made in the USA" but only the flag itself is made here. The pole, bracket, packaging and any other small parts are made in China. This is really sad....

I know, which I why I don't shop there much. But then tell me this: virtually everything you buy is made in China anyway these days. I believe most of the Apple products too.

I think they'll swing back again. China keeps raising their prices. If we can just get the cost of oil high enough, the shipping charges will kill the products too.

If we mirrored their trade laws it would swing back really quick! I'm all for free trade but it needs to be fair trade.

A couple of years ago I bought a new flag-made in the USA-with a metal pole. A week later the pole was completely rusted... I did buy a new one a couple of months ago at Home Depot and the label says "Proudly Made in the USA!". But, like you said, the flag was made here but the pole, etc., are imported. Yeesh.

I soundly agree with that! If you ask me that should be THE BASELINE for all free trade policy. Of course that would knock out China, Japan, Korea, who else?

If you want a real gol-darn USA flag, check your state's Senator's web site. You can buy a flag flown at the US Capitol building in DC on a specific day, and the cost is pretty reasonable.

The flag flying in front of my house right now (suitably lit) was flown for my Grandfather on the anniversary of his enlistment in the US Army Artillery Corps in 1918. He left MIT and enlisted. Got the Spanish flu in barracks a week before he was due to go to France. Survived the Flu, but never made it back to college.
