I feel liberated: just permanently deleted my facebook account
#1
Only reason I really joined was out of pure curiosity to see what was monopolizing so much of my wife's time. Never really posted much...was more of a lurker and, even then, only opened up facebook on my Mac or phone every 3 or 4 days.

So, it wasn't even much of a time waster for me.

The irritating thing for me was how, on the surface, it was meant to keep you connected to friends and family or get you reconnected to long lost friends or family, but no one really responded to messages or anything like that. I would send friend requests to long lost friends with a little note and they would accept my request, but never write anything back.

The whole thing just smacked of being kind of hypocritical if that's even possible (or, maybe it was just me!).

Anyway, supposedly I need to make sure that I don't accidentally log into fb for the next two weeks or else it will "reactivate" my supposedly permanently deleted account and I'll have to re-delete all over again.

Regardless, it's a good feeling nonetheless.

my gut impression (as I'm not and have never been on FB) is that the trend is wearing thin. I don't see as many posts about FB on other sites now and I think people are realizing for a multitude of reasons that they just don't need FB. that is also my impression from being married to someone who really liked FB.

Facebook is the new Myspace?

I still use it regularly but noticed a few weeks ago that traffic seems to be a whole lot lighter than it was before FB brought about the last round of sweeping "improvements." I can't find any hard evidence to support this, but would be willing to bet money that I'm right.

Most of my family was on Facebook and I enjoyed hearing about their trips and the things they were doing. Unfortunately the security issues became so convoluted and Facebook made it so clear that their end goal was to eliminate privacy that I abandoned it. Didn't delete my account but I only log in on very rare occasion now.

Pretty much describes my day.

My family makes good use of Facebook. I am talking with cousins with whom I haven't spoken in years. When your family is spread out across the entire country and beyond, FB is a great way to share photos and anecdotes with no fuss, no muss. I wish they'd stop screwing around with it because I really like it.

To each his own. I have never wanted to share my personal tragedies on Macresource, but obviously many people do and I've never had the urge to tell them they shouldn't.

I don't understand how you (pinkoos) can badmouth something that you apparently don't really use and don't really understand. Facebook is just a tool. Some people use it for posting nonsense, some people use it to post baby pictures, and some people use it to keep in touch with far flung family and friends. I'm in the last category and find it invaluable for keeping up with friends and family members all over the world. The facebook experience is completely under your control and functions based on the decisions you make. If you don't like how your facebook "friends" are using it, then hide their posts. If they decide they don't want to use it then call them on the phone instead.
