Time machine or Carbon Copy Cloner?
#1
I'm embarrassed to say I have never created a bootable backup.... just would selectively back up a few important files like iPhoto and iTunes.

I would like to create a backup and then continue with incremental backups. Would I do better using Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner?

CCC for the bootable backup, probabaly best to do that weekly or monthly...
Then Time Machine for the incrimental backup... Since Time Machine can't create a bootable backup.

For some reason TM every so often asks that it wants to do a complete back up from scratch. This takes days for me and brings the machine to a standstill. Not to mention that it can't find the shared backup disk half the time.

I use a little doodad that lets me schedule TM's backups so they do not interfere with my work. I have it set to backup at 1 or 2 in the morning. Cannot think of the app right now.

While TM backup isn't bootable, you can do a full restore from it by installing the Mac OS on a fresh disk, and then migrating data from TM. Will take over right where you left off.

I'd do both. hard drives are cheaper than your time.

Another vote for doing both, one can never have too many backups and as mentioned drives are so cheap it is foolhardy to put all your eggs in one basket. I have encountered situations where CCC failed and TM saved my bacon. I also run Retrospect as my final line of defense in addition to CCC & TM.

I have CCC set to update a clone of my hard drive every morning at 2 am to a USB drive. Works great as I am sleeping.

Both Smile 2 drives, time machine during the day and CCC overnight every week or so.
