Other than Hawaii or the Bahamas.
Needs to be kid friendly for ages 5 through 10 or so.
Would prefer to keep it either within the US or surrounding areas (ie, Mexico, Caribbean, etc.).
Any ideas?

Cancun - Playa del Carmen area has tons of child-friendly all-inclusive resorts. Airfare shouldn't be too bad from your neck of the woods.

What about the Florida Gulf coast? Maybe around Ft. Meyers area, etc. It can be nice there in December.

New York City. It hardly ever dips below 40 in December here. And there's plenty to see and do and eat. Eating out is not what it once was, given the proliferation of crappy fat-and-sugar chain restaurants, but you can still find some interesting food if that's your thing.

What are your favorite family activities ?
How 'warm' is warm ?
Even south Florida can get chilly in December.. only us Northerners are willing to swim in the Gulf in December. The locals just look and shake their heads.

When we lived in upstate NY we loved to go to Puerto Rico.
We stayed in San Juan (loved the El San Juan on Isla Verde) and did day trips for the kids to El Yuneque National Forest (a neat rain forest with waterfalls you can hick up to) and to Arecebo Radio Telescope (its only open for tourists a couple days a week so check before you go). Hiking in Old San Juan and checking out El Morro (the fort) were also nice walking tours.

Costa Rica. Fantastic wildlife, live volcanoes, great beaches, diverse cultural attractions, great (and cheap) healthcare, real close to Texas.
