advice on pet "safe" furniture?
#1
i'm looking at buying a sofa and want to buy something that won't tempt my feline friends to claw. Research suggests microfiber or leather.

additionally, i'm going to make sure the cats have plenty of scratching posts.

any suggestions?

My (very nearly because of this ex) wife's cat's destroyed my bachelor leather sofa. Luckily I had a replacement already.

First you must realize that your sofa will not remain pristine. Eventually kitty will scratch it and puke on it.

But I've heard microfiber holds up pretty well. I'm not crazy about the look, but I am considering for some reupholstery myself.

My cats love these flat cardboard scratchers I get at Trader Joe's. That has taken a lot of pressure off the furniture.

Microfiber is great for dealing with pet hair, but clawing? Cats are going to do what they instinctively are going to do. Even when declawed. My one clawed cat will occasionally claw at my microfiber furniture. I don't think it's as attractive as other fabrics. She really prefers my dining room chair covers.

Just recognize that you will be replacing furniture or getting rid of cats. Or just go with tubular chrome steel and sling backs and seats with pillows on them . Felines will shred everything , and their priority of clawing is proportional to the importance of the item to their human servants.

perhaps they sense some hostility from you.

my cat is quite good about it but he may be getting a companion in the near future.

I've had cats my whole life. Cat safe furniture doesn't exist. Do your best to get some nice scratching posts, teach them to use them, and clip nails.

Our cats don't claw (and are not declawed), but they are known to spray (at least one of them, but I don't know which one). That's why I'm a dog person.

Just "train" the cat
after all, pets don't have bad habits - they have bad owners.

That's a fact.
