Please don't give up on me! I'm sure there's a solution, if only someone can make the instructions clear enough for me…-

If your current boot drive contains less than 240 GB or so of data, clone it then restore it to the new SSD using Disk Utility. Then use System Preferences to designate the new SSD as your Startup Disk

Restart and you're done.

It was that easy for Mavis Mini. Her original Apple hard drive was only 80GB, so I simply cloned it to the new SSD from the external bootable clone that I had set up as her back up.

Unfortunately, in my case, the drive I use is 1TB and it has over 700GB used on it. Paring it down is too daunting a project for me at this point. Sad

As far as why I get so little sleep, I accommodate Mavis' schedule and watch some shows with her, until she goes off to bed.

Then I end up watching "my" shows and spending time on my computer, where as you probably know, one thing leads to another and then it's four in the morning. Four hours later Precious wakes up and starts playing with her bells and saying "I love you," which is impossible to ignore.

Gene needs =one person= to help him, ideally someone who's not batshit crazy. People competing with each-other with conflicting advice is not the way to go here.

Rolandos solution in the last post was exactly the way it should be done.

Rolando's 'solution' did not explain how to split your install between a small boot SSD and a bigger storage HDD, which is what Gene needs to do. Which is probably a result uf Gene spreading this over multiple threads and thinking people are going to read each one dilligently and remember all the details.

Thanks everyone

As Black said, it did get a bit out of hand, but it's under control now.

You'll see from my latest topic, I finally managed to set up the SSD.

I'm gratified that I was able to work it out.

Margaritas all around!

And to all a good night...

jdc,

I found Rolando's solution and it is what I did with the two notebook machines. But, the solution only works when the existing drive has less "stuff" on it than then new SSD. If the existing drive has much more stuff than you can fit on the SSD with room to spare, then you need to clean house before performing the clone. The clean house portion is what I detailed in my post.

Robert's solution looks viable but failed to consider the audience.
I have a free bag of halogen bulbs for anyone who even started to read it.

Black,

My solution will work No doubt about it. I've used the method several times. Not only with SSDs but also with platter drives. The detail I put into the post is because I wanted Gene to have a reasonable facsimile of step by step instructions. The process is actually very easy.

Here's the uber quick and dirty summary:

Clone original drive for backup. Copy extra "stuff" to archives drive, purge original stuff off primary drive. Once amount of used space is less than X amount of gigs, clone primary drive to SSD or platter drive. Done.

I'm proud of you, Robert. Not only did you hit the nail on the head, I also never thought you could be so concise!

I'm not sure where I said your solution wouldn't work. I'm thought I was clear it would work.
Did you see any evidence that Gene tried to follow it? Any thoughts about what the barrier to doing so may have been?
