How to tell if it's dead...?

I think Darwin Award contestants use a hammer.

This might be a task for the police bomb squad.

Probably inert, but "probably" isn't the definition you want when it involves high explosives. Call in professionals.

RPG?

technically you're correct.
But for those of us old enough to remember, the "RPG" was the B-40 (RPG-2) used
by the NVA & VC.

iirc, When they cleared out Ft. Holabird (Baltimore) in the early 70's, the Army discovered
a long forgotten bunker loaded with WWII & earlier ordinance including a load of M! rounds.
Reportedly took almost two weeks for an EOD detail from APG to clear it.

the rocket motor appears to be spent, I bet you can see up the tube where the propellant used to be

I don't think there was ever any device in the nose cones

Went past a pile of old Macs today, but could not scavenge, because I was working and couldn't lug anything bulky along with me. I was dying to grab the IIci.

Called local police. They cleared out houses around mine and across street for an hour, until the experts came and took it away.

PITA, but that was the right thing to do. If it turns out to be inert, you might even get it back.

Teachable moment here: "The internet says ..."

If you don't know what it is, what search terms would you use to start a search?
