I have a mini running snow leopard that I use for formatting drives. It’s stupid but that’s the direction Apple is going. Removing features as fast as they can and what isn’t removed is broken. It’s almost like they would prefer us to use IOS...

I've found the Yosemite Disk Utility quite useful in El Cap and beyond. (Yeah, did the hex editor trick.)

And I also keep Snow Leopard around for formatting drives (among other things).
