Itching all around eyes are OK. Antihistamines don't help. Do I see an ophthalmologist or family doctor?

.....as mentioned oral anti-histamines don't work well for eye allergies.....better to use eye drops..........

RAM,

I don't go by brand names when it comes to medicines. I go primarily by the active ingredient and purpose. Some are decongestant only, others are standard antihistamines, some are anti-inflammatory, some are mast-cell stabilizers, some are combinations. Case in point: Ketotifen Fumarate, which is the active ingredient of Zaditor, is also in Alaway.

The problem with eye issues is determining the actual cause of the problem. Conjunctivitis is especially a nuisance since it can be bacterial, viral and/or allergic. Each requires a different type of treatment or, in some cases, none at all. Or, it can start as one type (allergy or viral) and, due to other issues, become another.

One of my employees had viral conjunctivitis from the adenovirus. He treated the symptoms appropriately but couldn't stop rubbing at his eyes. Ended up with a nasty case of bacterial conjunctivitis that took two rounds of antibiotic drops to resolve. Although after a certain point, he was allowed back in the office because he was medicated for over 24 hours, we told him to stay home for an extra few days just to be on the safe side. It was that bad!
