First official birdie pic of '23!
#1
I've been hearing a call for the past few weeks that wasn't familiar to me but I could see a small bird flitting around. Then I heard another. I just haven't been able to figure out what it was.

Then I'm out shoveling snow (yeah, we got a couple inches of powder to cover up the ice!) and there it was not ten yards away! And I hear another a little ways away.

So it actually gave me time to go get the trusty SX60 and I got these:

I thought it was a Warbler but it's way too early then I saw the tail up in the air-a Carolina Wren!

They are different from House Wrens as they stay year round while House's migrate South in Winter. But Carolina's only come this far North if the Winter isn't too cold.

I've seen them now and then over the years but this is the first time I've gotten some decent images...

Living in So Cal, birds are always around. They were out in the "Storm of the Century" today - eating in the rain, they'll be out tomorrow - eating out of the rain. It must be fun, though, to see them for the first time each spring - kind of a built up anticipation and then there they are. Hopefully you don't get a crazy end-season cold snap that scares them all off!

With Climate Change speeding up now, you'll likely be seeing more of them, and earlier. Hopefully they find some good food sources - or generous hoomans!

I think they are really cute - their markings remind me of chipmunks. They’re around a lot here. Some of their songs are pretty, too. Great photos.

Yeah, it's not easy to discern male from female. I've read that the call helps to identify sexes so I think this is a male.

Thx, all, for looking in...

Then I'm out shoveling snow (yeah, we got a couple inches of powder to cover up the ice!)

I got in late on Friday around 3:30am - it was cold but not a flake of snow - woke up around 9:30am to all the snow.

What the hell...?

I felt bad because i didn't have time to shovel but thankfully it got warm enough Saturday afternoon to melt it.
