A baseball player for Texas A&M-Texarkana was shot while standing in the bullpen during a home game on Saturday. The Texarkana Police Department posted to Facebook on Saturday evening that it was investigating the circumstances of the shooting and that it appeared “he was struck by a stray bullet from some type of altercation in a nearby neighborhood.
The shooting happened in “about” the fifth inning of the school’s game against the University of Houston-Victoria. The student was shot in the chest and was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition

It's not a mass shooting, no one was killed, but it is just nuts.

We can't rule out that this was a side effect of self defense. Its possible, even likely that a life or multiple lives were saved.

At first I thought this was one of the fielders getting picked off like a sitting duck, so that would’ve been worse in my opinion.

These stray bullet killings are not all that uncommon historically. There is a famous story of a detective from Long Island who located somebody who had taken a random shot from a boat which had killed somebody equally randomly. There are also deaths occasionally from New Years Eve celebrations where people shoot guns into the air. That falling bullet will approach the earth at a velocity nearly that of its velocity as it left the muzzle. This one sounds similar.
More close to home, on the weekend of January 17, 1997, a high school girl in a school bus died as a result of a bullet fired in some sort of gang disagreement that happened blocks away. The LAPD solved that crime and the shooter was sent to prison.

FWIW, the terminal velocity of a bullet (say, fired straight upward) is typically not that large. Depending on the bullet
this science writer says ~200 mph at most, but less than 100 mph with some. (It’s an interesting little article).
But of course, if you shoot at a low angle, the bullet comes down sooner and hasn’t dissipated all that muzzle velocity.
A bad idea in any case.
