I thought I'd read many decades ago, that Graceland, the King's domicile, was tacky, kitschy, etc.
Talking to someone who'd been there in the last – five years, maybe – they said it was nothing of the sort.
Now, more often than not, I'm able to take them at their word.
But given some events over the last few years, now — not so much.
I'm wondering if I got it wrong, or if their take is whack.
One adjective I seemed to recall being used was opulent.
For all I know that meant he died on a golden toilet.
Anyway, it's just an idle First World Wondering.

I went in the 90s. It was better than I expected.

I went there in January 2017. I enjoyed it a lot. I'm sadder now because Lisa Marie is there and I was her fan.
Someone turned the lights out there in Memphis
Ooh, that's where my family's buried and gone (gone)
Oh yeah
Last time I was there I noticed a space left
Oh, next to them there in Memphis, yeah
In the damn back lawn

The grounds are impressive but most impressive are the grave sights and the room with a gazillion gold and platinum albums that Elvis earned.

I was in Memphis for Beale Street Festival in 2017 and was surprised Elvis and Graceland were.... how to say it.... not apparently relevant. I think I saw one sign for Graceland while riding a bus.

I went there several years ago. It's frozen in the 1970s, which I found fascinating. Worth a visit, in my opinion.

Yeah, part of the fascinating aspect for me was the 70s museum time capsule of it all.

I'm imagining folks touring a frozen-in-time Monticello or Mount Vernon (had they been frozen like Graceland) in 1840's would have chuckled at the silly dated look. Another decade or two later, and it's far enough removed to be charming.
