Trump and US commerce secretary say tariffs are delayed until 1 August
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...riff-delay

Donald Trump said on Sunday that his administration plans to start sending letters on Monday to US trade partners, dictating new tariff rates to be imposed on goods they sell to Americans. “It could be 12, maybe 15,” the president told reporters, “and we’ve made deals also, so we’re going to have a combination of letters and some deals have been made.”
With his previously announced 90-day pause on tariffs set to end on 9 July, the president was asked if the new rates would go into effect this week, or on 1 August, as some officials had suggested.

“No, they’re going to be tariffs, the tariffs, the tariffs are going to be, the tariffs,” the President began, uncertainly, “I think we’ll have most countries done by July 9, yeah. Either a letter or a deal.”

Sensing the confusion, his commerce secretary, Howard Lutnick jumped in to add: “But they go into effect on August 1. Tariffs go into effect August 1, but the president is setting the rates and the deals right now.”

Howie and Donald make such a great team, doncha think?

I saw that this morning on the political talk shows.

The problem is that trade deals typically take YEARS to set up. Dump has no concept of anything taking that long. After all, he said that there's be peace in the Middle East and that the Russia-Ukraine War would be over within 24 hours of his taking office?

Trump will send more tariff letters to foreign leaders 'in the coming days', White House says

Donald Trump will send foreign leaders more letters notifying them of new tariffs in the days to come, said Karoline Leavitt.

“There will be additional letters in the coming days,” the White House press secretary said, in addition to the 12 he plans to send today and the two already made public, which were to South Korea and Japan’s leaders,

As for why Trump decided to start with the two Asian allies, Leavitt said:

It’s the president’s prerogative and those are the countries he chose.

Trump has been posting more letters to world leaders on Truth Social, announcing new tariffs set to kick in from August.

These include:

25% US tariffs on goods from Japan, South Korea, Malaysia and Kazakhstan

30% US tariffs on South Africa

40% US tariffs on Laos and Myanmar

One of the worst parts of the chaos of this administration is understanding what even can happen anymore.

I remember reading that a US Court had declared that the President did not have the authority to unilaterally enact tariffs without Congress.

Was there something in that ugly country bankrupting bill that overrode that court decision? Or is this all just bluster by a man who is presiding over the greatest political backslide in history?

President Trump on Monday indicated there may be some wiggle room for nations to negotiate on trade despite his fresh threat of additional tariffs going into effect on Aug. 1

Trump spoke to reporters hours after he issued letters to roughly a dozen countries informing them that they would face tariff rates of 25 percent or higher beginning Aug. 1. That deadline was delayed from July 9.

“Is the Aug. 1 deadline firm now? Is that it?” a reporter asked Trump during a dinner with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House.

“No, I would say firm, but not 100 percent firm,” Trump replied. “If they call up and they say ‘we’d like to do something a different way,’ we’re going to be open to that. But essentially that’s the way it is right now.”

President Trump insisted Tuesday there would be “no extensions” on tariffs set to go into effect on dozens of countries Aug. 1, despite saying a day earlier that the deadline was “not 100 percent firm.”

“As per letters sent to various countries yesterday, in addition to letters that will be sent today, tomorrow, and for the next short period of time, TARIFFS WILL START BEING PAID ON AUGUST 1, 2025,” Trump posted to Truth Social.

“There has been no change to this date, and there will be no change,” he continued. “In other words, all money will be due and payable starting AUGUST 1, 2025 — No extensions will be granted.”
